Every few weeks someone in Surat asks me the same thing. "Shopify, or should we get something custom made?" Usually a cousin has told them custom is better, or an agency has quoted ₹6 lakh for a store they will own "outright". Here is the honest version, from having built both kinds and having watched one saree house make the call.
Start with what a saree store actually has to do
Forget features for a second. A lehenga or saree store in India has to do six things on day one, or the first customer leaves.
- Take a payment by UPI, card or net banking, and offer cash on delivery where it makes sense.
- Show a price that includes GST and produce an invoice that is correct.
- Let the buyer pick fit type, size and blouse details without a phone call.
- Quote shipping to Dubai or Toronto at checkout without a phone call.
- Let your own team add the new collection on a Sunday without calling a developer.
- Be found on Google for what brides actually type.
Shopify does all six out of the box or with apps that thousands of Indian stores already use. A custom store does all six only after someone builds all six, and then maintains them.
Where Shopify wins
Payments and tax are solved problems. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and the rest plug in. Tax-inclusive pricing is a setting. Invoices are an app. You will not be the first saree brand to need any of this, which is exactly why it works.
Variants and metafields were made for ethnic wear. Semi-stitched versus fully stitched. Size. Sleeve. Blouse length. Dupatta included or not. Each becomes a field that shows on the listing and that the buyer can filter on. JMS Studio states fit type on every product, so the answer is on the page before the DM is sent.
Your team runs it. Add products, change prices, run a festive sale, mark a design sold out. None of that needs us after launch.
International is a checkbox, not a project. Currencies, shipping zones, duties: it is configured, not coded. JMS shipped to customers in more than 25 countries from a store that a family business runs itself.
Where custom wins, and it does happen
There are real cases. A made-to-measure flow with thirty measurements and a tailor's worksheet. A marketplace where forty designers each have their own shop. A store that has to talk to a factory system in real time. If you can describe your need that precisely, custom might be right, and it will cost what precision costs.
If the case for custom is "we want to own it" or "it will be faster", it is not a case. Shopify stores are yours. And a well-built Shopify store loads faster than most custom builds, because the hard parts are already optimised.
What each costs, honestly
Third-party market ranges for India, not our rates. Every store is quoted to scope.
| Route | Typical range | What you are paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Shopify store, studio-built | ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh | Theme setup, catalogue, payments, shipping, basic SEO |
| Properly branded Shopify store | ₹1.5 to 5 lakh | Custom design, collection storytelling, fit and size tools, structured data |
| Fully custom build | ₹5 lakh and up | Bespoke front end, integrations, wholesale portals, and the maintenance that follows |

What JMS chose, and why
JMS Studio had made bridal couture since 1981 and sold wholesale. The retail store went on Shopify so the family could run it themselves, ship abroad, and change a price without waiting on a developer. The wholesale side went on a separate password-protected catalogue so trade rates never touched the retail store. Twelve months later: 61,893 sessions, 25+ countries, zero ads. The full rebuild is in the JMS case study, and the step-by-step is in how do I sell lehengas online from Surat.
The short answer, again
Build on Shopify. Spend the money you save on the two things that actually move sales for an ethnic-wear label: photography that survives a phone screen, and pages written around what brides search. If you want to see how we do that, the Shopify page says exactly what we build and what to expect. Or just message me with your Instagram handle. I will tell you honestly whether you need a store yet.
